Carson | 'We’ve got loads of character'

Under-18s captain Hayden Carson has praised the character of the side to win late on at Leeds United.

Conor McLeod opened the scoring before the Old Gold were pegged back nine minutes from time. However, Richard Walker’s side rallied and skipper Carson netted the winner on 86 minutes – his first goal of the season and first as a scholar. The defender has reflected on collecting a second away victory this week, digging out the points and wanting to finish third.

On picking up another win

“It feels amazing. It was a tough game. They’re a really good side and we had to work really hard.

“It wasn’t our best performance but the lads found a way, we stuck together in the second half even after they equalised.

“We picked ourselves up and it was nice to get my first goal of the season as well.”

On digging out the points

“At that stage of the game, it was about trying to see it out. We didn’t have much possession and they were putting on the pressure.

“We were trying to sit in and do our best, but unfortunately they got a goal. That’s where we have to pick ourselves up and go and get the next goal.

“We want to aim for the third place in the league and that means three points here and hopefully another three points on Saturday. We’ve done really well to dig out the three points.”

On the character of the group

“In the group we’ve got loads of character and we know how good we are. We can pick ourselves up, we’re a brilliant team and we can dig out results like that.

“Maybe last season we couldn’t have done that. We’d have dropped our heads and they could’ve gone on to win the game, but I think that’s the biggest difference this season.

“We’ve made a massive change in our character and we’ve done really well to get that second goal.”

On scoring his first of the season

“It was a really good feeling and the best feeling I’ve had all season, so I’m really happy.

“I have a great relationship with Caden (Voice). I think we work really well together as a centre back pairing. It was a nice little assist from him as well.”

On wanting to finish third

“We said before the start of the season that we want to finish fourth and I think that’s now a guarantee, but the lads deserve third.

“We’ve been a really good team this season and we’ve had some really good results, so I think we can get the win on Saturday and get that third place which I think is massive for the team and club.”
