One Pack Week | Edwards hosts press conference with SEN pupils

Wolves head coach Rob Edwards gave a press conference with a difference this week, after fielding questions from a dozen pupils with autism from Tettenhall Wood School.

As part of One Pack Week, which sees Wolves celebrate the equality, diversity and inclusion of the club and its local community, the pupils were invited for a special afternoon at Compton Park and given a surprise by Edwards.

Arranged by Wolves supporter and broadcaster Robbie Meakin, who is also a staff member at Tettenhall Wood – an all-through specialist school for children with autism – the pupils arrived at the training ground thinking they were going to hold a Q&A with a member of club staff, so were thrilled when discovering they would instead be grilling the head coach.

Posing questions about football, such as who is better out of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, whether he thinks Arsenal or Manchester City will win the Premier League, and what made him want to become a coach, as well as more personal questions about his favourite food, colour and film as well as being asked to show off his best dance moves, the children were able to put their journalistic skills to the test with an engaging Edwards.

Explaining how the session came about, Meakin said: “We had ‘Careers Week’ at the start of March and there’s quite a few of pupils who are quite interested in media, so with the connections I have to the club I got in touch and asked if it would be possible to hire out the media room at Compton or Molineux and get some of the kids to ask questions to the staff in a Q&A style.

“So then when Rob Edwards came in, you could just see the look on their faces, because that was a fantastic surprise. Credit to Rob for getting involved and giving his time up for some of the hard-hitting questions like, ‘Who is your favourite Powerpuff Girl?

“I did ask before if the club wanted me to vet the questions in case they asked about the season, because some of them can be straight to the point, but they were open to Rob being asked absolutely anything, and the kids have absolutely loved it.

“It’s going to help them massively. I don’t think they want to go back to school, they want to stay here. But it’s been a fantastic afternoon and I’m not sure who’s enjoyed it more – the staff or the kids, so all credit to the club, and for everyone involved for allowing us to come down and give the kids this experience, which they’ll cherish forever.”

The special Q&A was hosted by Sky Sports reporter and Wolves Foundation ambassador Amber Sandhu – who is the one usually tasked with posing questions to Edwards at his Compton Park press conferences – and is set to be shown on Sky Sports News on Saturday morning ahead of Wolves’ Premier League fixture with Tottenham Hotspur at Molineux.

Headteacher Ross Ashcroft was also in attendance at the training ground, and after witnessing his pupils ask the head coach questions he has never been asked before – or probably will again – feels the event was one of the proudest moments of his time in charge at Tettenhall Wood.

He added: “There were some really interesting questions from the pupils, some football related, some not so much, and we even had discussions about the Powerpuff Girls, which I’m not sure Rob’s ever had before in his career.

“I have to thank Robbie Meakin for helping organise this, because it’s been a brilliant day and it’s going to have a huge impact on the pupils.

“Getting them into environments like this, which is so unfamiliar to them, shows what they’re able to do, but they’re coming away today having done a fantastic job, and it will only build their confidence.

“I think it’s been one of the proudest moments of my career. There are loads of things that we’ve done at the school which I’ve been incredibly proud of, both of the staff and the students, but this will probably top it, so I’ll be tuning in to Sky Sports on Saturday with my children, and I can’t wait to see them on the screen.”
