As he prepares to head to the World Cup with Portugal later this month, Jose Sa discusses the greatest football show on earth before taking readers on his favourite travels around the globe.
First World Cup memories
My first memory was not of a World Cup, but the Euros in 2004. That was the first competition I remember and I have good memories because we got to the final, but we lost against Greece, 1-0. I remember after the semi-final when we won, everyone went to the streets to celebrate. Even after the final, everyone was on the streets after the game.
Favourite goal
I don’t remember any goal.
Watching World Cups
When I was young, I didn’t watch much football. I don’t remember watching a World Cup, just 2004.
Playing at one
It would mean a lot. I’ve already been part of the Portugal squad at a World Cup, and it’s an amazing feeling to be there, an amazing environment and experience, and of course I’d love to play in a game at one. I would be very happy if I could have that.

Last country visited
I went to the Maldives last summer. It was very good. We enjoyed it a lot. It was an amazing place to visit.
First holiday abroad
I didn’t go on many holidays when I was young. But I remember the first big holiday I took, when I was playing for Porto, was to Mexico. I went with a few friends and it was incredible.
Favourite trip
I’d have to say Maldives is one of them. It’s so beautiful. Dubai would be another amazing place. I’ve been there a few times with my family.
Bucket list
I have a lot of places I still want to go because I love to travel. I loved Thailand, and I want to go to Korea, Bali, Bahamas – I have a lot of places still to visit, but I still have a lot of time to do it!
