With the World Cup well underway this summer, Hugo Bueno discusses discusses the greatest football show on earth before taking readers on his favourite travels around the globe.
First international memories
My first memory of watching the World Cup was in 2010 when the Spanish won it. I remember we also won the Euros in the two years before and after I was so happy. I was thinking, ‘Is this the normal thing?’ My dad came to me and said it was the first time we did it and it’s not something that’s going to happen every year, but I was quite little so was like, ‘No, we will win every time. That is normal for us now.’ But then I realise how difficult doing that is.
Favourite goal
It’s obviously Iniesta’s winner in extra time. It has to be that one. We knew that year that we had a good chance because of the players we had and the momentum that we had before, but the feeling when that goal went in was so nice and so special. I remember it was such a hard game against the Netherlands and it was something incredible that we still speak about nowadays.
Watching World Cups
I’ve always watched World Cups and sometimes I would watch them with my family and sometimes I would watch them with my friends. Sometimes they would all come together and we’d come to my house and watch it with my family or sometimes me and my brother would go to their houses. But World Cups are always such a different feeling to anything else. I cannot explain it. The happiness, the nervousness and the emotion you feel when you are watching your country is like nothing else, so the World Cup to me is the best competition we have in football.
Playing at one
It would be a dream come true. To play for my country at such an important tournament is something that you dream about as a kid. It’s hard to imagine. There’s a lot of competition in Spain and really good players all around the world, so it wouldn’t be easy for me to achieve this but would mean the world to me.

Last country visited
I went to Bali last summer for a holiday. It was such a long trip because we had to take three flights; Vigo to Madrid, Madrid to Dubai and Dubai to Denpasar and it was about 20 hours in total, but it was worth it. It’s such a great place to go and enjoy, because it’s just different from anywhere else.
First holiday abroad
I never went on a holiday abroad when I was younger, we would always just travel within Spain. I remember going abroad on school trips, but on holiday it would just be to Spain, like Madrid, because I had family there, to Malaga and Huelva in the south, and because where I live in Vigo was such a good place to take a holiday, you don’t need to go anywhere else!
Favourite trip
My favourite holiday was when I went to Cadiz and Barcelona with my friends two or three years ago. It was a such a great time to go away with my friends and my brother and enjoy the time off.
Bucket list
I have never been to Ibiza – and I’m Spanish! When I say to people I’ve never been, they cannot believe it. I’ve just never been, but it’s one of the places on my list which I need to tick off.
