Premier League debut
15th March 2014 | Fulham 1-0 Newcastle United
As a boyhood Newcastle United supporter, Armstrong joined the Magpies’ ranks at the age of nine and progressed through the youth set up to be named among in a Premier League matchday squad for the first time in early 2014. Two months later, a 17-year-old Armstrong came off the bench in the 86th minute to make his top flight debut in Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage, becoming the club’s second youngest player to ever play in the Premier League. He would appear another four times late on in games during the final months of the season.
First trophy
21st May 2014 | Netherlands 1-1p England
Armstrong has represented England at every youth level from under-16s all the way through to under-21s, with his most successful period coming with the under-17s. The striker scored twice in each of England’s three qualifying games for the 2014 UEFA U17 European Championships against Armenia, Gibraltar and Republic of Ireland, before netting the decisive goal against Italy in the elite stages to secure progression into the finals. After scoring against Malta and Turkey in the group stages, Armstrong missed the final due to injury as England overcame Netherlands to lift the title.
First senior goal
8th August 2015 | Coventry City 2-0 Wigan Athletic
The striker headed on loan to League One Coventry City in the summer of 2015 to get senior playing time under his belt and had a debut to remember for the Sky Blues. Facing Wigan Athletic in the opening game of the new third tier season, Armstrong struck twice for the hosts to secure a 2-0 win at the Ricoh Arena. A week later, he netted another brace in a 4-0 victory away to Millwall – the first of those goals coming from 35 yards out. His stunning early season form saw Armstrong named League One Player of the Month for August after scoring five goals in his first five games.
First Team of the Year award
21st April 2016 | PFA League One Team of the Year
Armstrong would enjoy an incredible first full season of senior football, finishing the 2015/16 League One season with 20 goals for Coventry City, which saw him top the club’s scoring charts, as well as being named the Sky Blues’ Young Player of the Season. The striker was also making a name for himself outside of Coventry, by being named in the PFA Team of the Year. That would be the first of three Team of the Year awards Armstrong has picked up in his career, with the most recent coming just two years ago after helping Southampton back into the Premier League in May 2024.
Best scoring season
8th May 2021 | Blackburn Rovers 5-2 Birmingham City
Since his breakthrough season with Coventry, Armstrong has twice beaten his season record of goals, by hitting 28 in 40 games for Blackburn Rovers in 2020/21 and 21 in 46 for Southampton in 2023/24. Armstrong was held off the top spot of the Championship’s top scorer back in 2021 by Ivan Toney, who struck 33 goals for Brentford. Armstrong scored five time in his first three matches that season, including a hat-trick against Wycombe Wanderers, while finishing the campaign by netting two trebles in the last three games, in a pair of 5-2 wins over Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City.
