Matchday Diary | Tammi George

Wolves Women midfielder Tammi George shares her matchday routine and superstitions.

First thing

My matchday isn’t much different to my usual day. I'll wake up have breakfast at home first and then go and eat more food at Telford.

Food and drink

The first thing I have at home is granola, Greek yoghurt and fruit, with a glass of orange juice. Then when I get to Telford, I'll have poached egg on toast with beans and cheese. I have to keep it all the same.

Talking a good game

I travel into matches by myself, and because I’m always late, I’m always running and rushing around on my own for ages, sorting myself out so I never really speak to anyone before the match. Then when I get to Telford, I’ll probably just sit at the table closest to the door, to be honest, as that’s usually the only place which is free, so I just take any seat I can get. When I’m chatting to the girls, we don’t really talk about the game before, we just talk about the weekend.

On the headphones

I’m quite sociable, so I don’t really listen to any music or put headphones on like others do. I don’t really listen to music on the way into Telford either. I also didn't contribute much to the music being put on in the changing room last season because I didn’t come back into the team until January, so it was already sorted, but we do always make a playlist at the start of the year to add songs onto. I’m a massive fan of Spanish and Latin music, so that’ll always be my contribution.

Bus buddies

I don’t really have a set table. Most of the group have a set table where they sit, and are with the same people, but I just like to roam around and sit wherever. I love a chat so will talk to anyone! But most of the time when we’re on a coach together to away games, Match of the Day is on, so I’ll also watch that.

At the ground

When we first get to the grounds, we'll put our stuff in the changing rooms and then, have a pitch walk to decide what boots to wear. We also have pre-match food at Telford, which is the same as the food at Compton, so I like keeping the food the same, and then when I’m getting changed, I have to wear the same underwear and socks. I have a set especially for matchday.

Game mode

I don’t really have a set thing to get me up for it. I’m always ready for the game regardless. Just before we go out onto the pitch after the warm-up, I’m going over in my head what my role is and what I need to be doing in and out of possession. That’s when I start to focus about game specifics.

Post-match plans

We'll always have food after the game. I like having chicken and rice, something that actually fills me up, but most of the time we’ve been having pizza and I can’t stand it. Then after that, if it's a home game, I tend to meet up with some of the girls and reflect on the game. If there’s a Premier League game on after ours has finished, I’ll go and watch that and then spend some time with my family.

Switching off

I do struggle to switch off after a game. I have to really find something to do so I can take my mind off it. If it's been a bad result, I find it really hard to take my mind off it, Sometimes I don’t want to talk and I literally shut myself away, and then sometimes it'll be the opposite, and I can't shut up because I’m ranting about the game. But it’s easier to take your mind off it when you've got work the next day, but if there's nothing planned, I find it so difficult to switch off.
