Wolves set a new Premier League win record as they made it five victories in a row away at Manchester United on Sunday and the Matchday Live Extra team were in position to give their thoughts post-match.
Vitor Pereira’s side have been the inform team of the top flight over the last six games, with Pablo Sarabia’s free-kick – just moments after he came off the bench – securing another three points to secure the Old Gold’s Premier League safety for another season.
After the final whistle, former Wolves full-back Andy Thompson discussed achieving a first double over Man United since 1980, keeping a clean sheet despite Dan Bentley coming in as a late replacement for Jose Sa – who got injured in the warm-up, and aiming to push up the league in the remaining games this season.
Doing the double over the Red Devils
“We’ve come up to Old Trafford and done the double over Manchester United and you could just see what it meant to the fans, with the players going down there to celebrate with them. It’s a great day today to get that result, another three points – that’s five wins in a row and nothing is going wrong at the moment! It wasn’t a quality game to watch.
“Both teams weren’t at their best, but you’ve got to stay in there and hang in there to get the result that you want, and that’s what Wolves did. There was a bit of quality from one of the subs coming on in Sarabia, putting it straight into the top corner, and these things happen. If you can keep yourself in the game, don’t give anything away, you’ve always got that opportunity to get something out of it, and that’s exactly what they’ve done. Again, it just shows the quality that we have and the way we go about the game.”
Keeping the clean sheet
“We defended so well today. I know we got ourselves in trouble at times, but the blocks, the headers, the line that we kept, it just shows the quality that we’ve got in the squad and the team. It just seemed like when they got past one of the players, there was somebody backing them up, or got the block or got the challenge in, but that’s what it’s all about.
“That’s something that they’ve done really well. It’s about making it difficult for teams and the opposition to get anything out of the game, and there was an example of that with the way they defend. But the belief that they’ve got in each other’s ability. When they think somebody will get past them, they’re there to get back and recover, and there were examples in the game.
End of Strand Larsen’s run of goals
“I think they dealt with him pretty well, but I don’t think the quality was brilliant up to him. They got the upper hand on him and just seemed to edge him out of the game. You’re going to have games like that when the quality isn’t coming up to you and he seemed frustrated and he was frustrated.
“But what he did do, and this is what I like about him, he tried to battle for everything. He carries on and he battles on, even though it wasn’t going for him today, and that’s what you want from your side. We made it difficult for United with the way that we played and the way that we defended, they had the most possession, but it doesn’t win you games.”
"We are fighting every single game and improving a lot. We are enjoying ourselves now. We are very happy."

Pereira uniting the club
“That was one thing that Nuno had when he was here, he united the team with the fans, and I think Vitor’s tried to do that as well. It helps with results, the confidence coming from the team and the supporters getting the results that they want, and although it wasn’t a great watch, it’s all about the three points and winning games.
“It doesn’t matter how you win them or what you do, but today it was defending well and making sure you get it right. A clean sheet wins you the game with the Sarabia free-kick and it just shows the quality and the confidence they’ve got in each other. They should be proud about what they’ve done, and you can see what it means to the Wolves fans.”
Pushing for the rest of the season
“What you want to do now as a team is to finish as high as you can up the league. That’s put us level with Man United now, above West Ham, 38 points – the same as Man United, only goal difference has got them above us, but we’ve just got to keep going, finish the season as well as possible, keep playing, and it will be a great finish considering where we were around Christmas.
“There was a bit of desperation around the club, in the players, and then all of a sudden the manager comes in and it seems to have changed. It’s not an accident that things have changed – it’s come from the manager and his coaching staff. When you can get the players to connect with the fans, you’ve got a big problem for the opposition.”
Thompson was talking to Matt Ponter on Wolves’ official post-match podcast, Matchday Live Extra, which is available to listen to now on all podcast providers.
