Gomes | 'It is our duty to step up'

Joao Gomes says the inconsistency Wolves have shown all season must stop as attention quickly turns to West Ham United on Monday evening.

The Brazilian is still hurting from the defeat at Everton on Wednesday, with Wolves failing to build on their four-match unbeaten run during two matches in the space of five days. That inconsistency is typical of the Old Gold’s season, even mid-game at points earlier in the campaign, and Gomes has called on the group to rally and start putting in more complete performances on a regular basis.

On a change in performances needed

“It’s a lot more difficult to talk about a defeat than it is about a win. We need to take responsibility over what happened and do what needs to be done. I'm not talking about anyone in particular. I'm not talking about just others, but also myself, the manager and everyone from the top down.

“I think that across the season, it's been a little bit tough. Our behaviour, the way we played was very much different in every match. We used to do 45 really good minutes, and then 45 not as good. Right now, we're in a position where sometimes we play really well, sometimes we play really poorly, there's no real middle ground. I think we need to find a balance, because this is the Premier League, and we will face a lot of difficult opponents.”

On playing for the fans

“They are disappointed because they are lovers of football. They love football, but mostly they love Wolverhampton and we, as a team, represent that, so it is our duty to step up. They're definitely within their rights to be disappointed and upset, that just means we need to be better and do better.”

On West Ham coming up next

“It's the most important match of the season, but that's how I see every game. It's always the most important game. But this one, we obviously have a lot in mind. We have a lot of scores to settle. We do need a really good result, and that's what I'm hoping for, because we must leave this current situation that we're going through.

“Every match is important, but obviously right now our goal is just to steer away from the relegation zone as soon as possible. Every three points that we can get, whether it's against City or any other club, matters the most right now. Just being able to win the next games is key for us.”

On the Brazilians in the squad

“Everyone is really important to me. But obviously, because I’ve been here for a little while longer, I have built a good relationship with Matheus. He was really important for me to adapt, because at the time I barely knew any English. I still don't know that much English, but he was so important to me. We have been building this good relationship on and off the pitch, which means a lot to me.

“We have to do everything that we possibly can to create more chances and opportunities for him score for us. He has been key for us, not only off but also of the pitch, you can really see how much he has grown in leadership, and how important that is for us as a team.”
