Toti | 'It’s really important to get off to a good start'

Toti has reiterated the importance of Wolves getting off to a positive start in this season’s Premier League so not to experience a repeat of last year’s struggles.

The defender has been one of four players who Vitor Pereira has entrusted with the captain’s armband this summer and despite the pre-season results the team has experienced ahead of Saturday evening’s clash with Manchester City at Molineux, Toti is confident the Old Gold can cause a shock on opening day.

On his summer break

“It was a good break. I went back to America again because I like America, so I’m going to try and go there every year as I have many friends there, but it was good. I always go with my cousins, and we had a good time and enjoyed it.

“But even when I was there, I tried to work [out] and because I have my cousins, we were all working together, motivating each other and it was good. I met some new people as well, in America and when I went to Greece too.

“I was there with a few players from the team here, like [Jorgen Strand] Larsen, and I also ended up in Portugal just with my family to relax a little bit before the season starts.”

On preparing for the new campaign

“It was good to leave the UK for a little bit and we went to Portugal, and after Spain, so we prepared well during the time that we were there. We had some friendlies as well, and we wanted to have some better scores from the from the training games, and although we made a couple of mistakes, this is the right time to make those mistakes so we can improve.

“It's definitely as tough and as demanding as it always has been, but it needs to be like this because players come from the holidays and having had maybe three or four weeks without doing much training, so it’s important to prepare well.

“During the pre-season, the trainings are tough because we know when the season starts, it’s going to be tough like that too. If you prepare well, you’re going to be more ready for the games too.”

On welcoming new signings to the club

“They’ve all been good, Fer [Lopez], David [Moller Wolfe] and Jhon Arias are all good signings for us. We’ve tried to help them since they arrived, because it’s not easy to come to a new team, especially at the beginning it's tough because you need to adapt to new teammates and a new way of playing.

“But I think they adapted very quickly. Fer was the first one who arrived and he’s been doing well, but we’ve been trying to help each one of them.”

On aiming for a good start

“I definitely feel ready. We need to be ready and if you’re not ready, you need to be ready. I’m very excited for the new season because it’s always good and everybody has been waiting for the Premier League to start again.

“It’s really important to get off to a good start and get as many points you can at the beginning, so you can be more comfortable during the Premier League season. Of course, you need to think game by game, but we definitely need to try to make as many points as possible early on.

“It was kind of like a relief with the way that we finished last season, but we need to take the good things from last season and try to implement them this season, but also improve again. We have some more stuff that we need to improve, but it’s going to come with the games.”

On opening against Man City

“The first game, of course, is not going to be easy. We know we’re going to face Man City, and you always expect a tough team because they have many players with quality, and they add some more new signings every year.

“But we need to look to ourselves as well. We need to believe because we know that we have players with quality. We’ve beaten them before so why not do it again? We need to respect them but know that we have a good team to try to get some good points.

“We have the home factor and we’re going to have the fans and they’re going to motivate us and push us. As players, we also want to try and have a good start and get some points from them.”
