Miguel | 'It's frustrating, but we keep going'

Luis Miguel admitted Wolves’ draw with Brighton & Hove Albion at Molineux was frustrating for everyone, but feels it was still a positive point to claim against a good Seagulls side.

The assistant head coach spoke after the match following Vitor Pereira’s sending off – meaning the boss was not allowed to undertake the usual media duties – which occurred just moments before Wolves took the lead after Marshall Munetsi’s powerful strike was parried into his own net by Bart Verbruggen.

But despite once again having to settle for a point after taking the lead for the second time in two matches, Miguel is confident the team will be able to get themselves out of their current situation and put a win on the board sooner rather than later.

On taking a point at home to Brighton

“It was a little bit frustrating because what happened in the last game at Spurs now happened again – we conceded the goal in the last minutes, so it's frustrating, but we keep going.

“With Strand Larsen and with Arias again, we knew we could finish the game with the second goal, but we are playing against a very good team. Brighton won 3-1 last game in Chelsea, so we are not playing again a small team. They are very good and it was a pity that we didn’t get the three points.

“We’ll see at the end of the season if this is one point gained or two points lost, but we are working hard to improve the players, to avoid the mistakes, and let's focus for the next game.”

On Pereira’s sending off

“I didn't see it, but I will apologise for Vitor because it's not in his character to do that. It was two seconds of frustration with what happened with our team.

“It was nothing in relation to the ref or with the Brighton team. It was with our team and he was frustrated. The ball was near him, and he just kick the ball.

“Sometimes we have a bottle of water and we kick the bottle of water, but it was one or two seconds of frustration and I want to apologise, because Vitor is not like that. But these things happen because we are human.”

On switching to a back five

“It was Vitor’s decisions. He's reading the game and he thinks that it is better sometimes to play with a line of four, and sometimes a line of five. We are working the two systems, so these are just the options, and let's see in the future if we’re going to do the same or not.

“But I think for the other team, sometimes it's not easy to face this kind of two systems at same time or in the same game. But we are working hard to avoid conceding goals and getting the clean sheets, but it's not possible in this moment, but for sure, in the future, we will get that, because we are working very, very hard on it.

“It's frustrating but we just keep going because what are you going to do? We’ve just got to focus on the next game and give confidence to our players. We are the same coaches from last year, so they know us, we know the players, and the last two weeks we’ve worked with all the team, so we are not here to complain, but we are here to arrange solutions to get points for our team.”

On players sitting deep as the game went on

“Football is like this. When we are winning, the players want to defend and want to play for the result, and the other team wants to go to attack and sometimes they are not balanced, and we can score the second goal.

“We are expecting that they are unbalanced and in their counter attack, we're going to score the second goal and finish the game. We didn't do that and they scored in a fast corner that we had advised the players about that.

“But we can’t complain about the players because they did very well and they did everything. We have a lot of confidence in these players, and, for sure, we're going to improve them.”

On Munetsi’s contribution to the goal

“Munetsi is a wonderful kid. He's an amazing player, he's giving everything and this he's doing his best to help the team. He came also in the beginning of this season and he was not fit like was last season, but now he's coming into his best level, and is the helping the team.

“His teammates follow him in the running, in the pressure, in the happiness in his face and he’s scoring goals also, which is very important. He is a special play that always gives what he has inside of him.”

On Strand Larsen’s disappointment at being taken off

“We know that Jorgen is struggling with these injuries since the beginning of the season, and he is not fit 100 per cent. Vitor said in the press conference, the player knows that he's not fit, everybody knows in the club that we want Jorgen at 100 per cent.

“But we’re trying to put him to play and then to save the player. We hope that he comes back as soon as possible to 100 per cent, to help the team and to be in his best level. But in this moment, everybody knows that he's not in his best level, and we are not here to lie to the people.”
