U21 preview | Wolves vs Real Madrid

Wolves under-21s begin their Premier League International Cup campaign by hosting Europe’s most successful club Real Madrid at Molineux on Wednesday evening, 7pm kick-off.

James Collins’ side have also been drawn alongside RB Leipzig, PSV Eindhoven and AS Monaco this season, but the Madrid clash provides an eye-catching start to the competition.

The International Cup presents a third competition this season already for the Old Gold, who are unbeaten in Premier League 2 action after victories over Burnley and Blackburn Rovers and a draw with Stoke City.

The youngsters lost out to Wealdstone in the National League Cup and, although they pushed the League One side all the way in an eight-goal thriller, they were edged out by Stockport County in the Vertu Trophy last week.

Wolves have competed in the International Cup for the past three season, but this is the first time Madrid have provided the opposition, and more than 3,000 supporters will be inside Molineux on the night.

In previous years, Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco, Porto and Ajax have all travelled to Molineux, and supporters can secure their ticket for the Madrid tie by clicking here.

Pre-match thoughts

Head coach James Collins is expecting a special experience for his side as they welcome a European giant to Molineux.

He said: “Real Madrid is the pinnacle of football. We’ve got an incredible draw and it’s a competition to be really excited about, to play under at Molineux early in the season, and it’s a great challenge for our players to see how they can perform.

“There’s a definite excitement when we play against the big clubs, especially foreign clubs, as we don’t get to play a lot in Europe, so it always brings an added excitement and an added enjoyment.

“The boys were especially buzzing when they heard we had Real Madrid because they’re a team we’ve never played in my time here, and it’s also such a big club, an iconic football club, but all of the games are going to be great experiences for boys to develop and learn from.

“I believe any games we can get at Molineux will help develop the players a little bit more than at our normal venues, so it would be wonderful to have the support of the Wolves fans there as we want to put the pressure on the boys in that way, and it’ll be good to see what comes out of it.”
