U21 Report | Newcastle United 1-1 Wolves

Newcastle 1 (Neave 33) Wolves 1 (McLeod 15)

Wolves under-21s concluded their 2025/26 Premier League 2 campaign with an entertaining score draw away to Newcastle United on Monday evening.

Conor McLeod opened the scoring 15 minutes in with a clinical finish, before Sean Neave struck from close range and restored parity not long before half-time.

Wolves created the better chances in the second-half, with Wes Okoduwa pounding the crossbar, but Newcastle remained disciplined and James Collins’ side were forced to settle for a point in their final outing.

Neither side set the game alight within the opening stages, with Dani Angel registering the first attempt of the evening just shy of 10 minutes. He latched onto Dexter Lembikisa’s delivery, but the forward generated too much loft on the header, sending it over the crossbar.

The hosts almost responded perfectly, as Matheos Ferreira crashed an effort against the post from close-range. A Newcastle free-kick fell to Mason Miley in the penalty area, who calmly laid it off for Ferreira to strike at goal and come inches away from the opener.

Moments later, McLeod broke the deadlock with a sublime finish following superb work from Lembikisa. Tom Edozie picked up Lembikisa’s initial saved effort and had his volley blocked into the path of McLeod, who gave Harris in goal no chance, bending a perfect strike into the top corner.

Wolves looked to double their lead with McLeod leading the charge through on goal, but the lunging Angel failed to latch onto the square ball.

The visitors came to rue the chance to go two goals ahead approaching the break, as Neave equalised with a clinical finish from inside the penalty area.

The Old Gold sought an advantage going into half-time, with Sebastian Lochhead presented with a good opportunity from a corner, but his tame connection drifted wide.

Half-Time | Newcastle 1-1 Wolves

The second 45 began similarly to the first, with neither goalkeepers forced into action until the hour mark, when Alfie Brooks was comfortably behind Alex Murphy’s free-kick.

Wolves found their rhythm again midway through the half, and came close to regaining their advantage on two occasions. First, Dayman found McLeod in space inside the area, but the ball was snatched away before the Wolves youngster could make a connection.

Moments later, Makenzie Bradbury surged through midfield and reached the penalty area before picking out Okoduwa on the right flank, who struck a fierce effort that rattled the crossbar.

Proceedings became increasingly transitional after a slow start to the half, and Neave came close to his second of the evening when he headed over the bar from close range.

The action remained exciting, and the hosts could, and possibly should, have taken the lead with 10 minutes to go. Neave did excellent to jink away from a handful of Wolves defenders and pull a cross back for Rory Finnernan, but his effort was missed at the near post.

Lembikisa was next to try his luck, curling an effort just wide of the post, before Brooks in the Wolves net produced last-minute heroics to preserve the point. Neave found space on the edge of the area and drove a low strike towards goal, but Brooks was down well to make the save.

Despite both side’s attempts to take all three points at the death, McLeod and Neave’s strikes were enough to share the spoils.
