Anna Morphet admitted that her side were ‘far below their best’ following Wolves Women’s defeat to Black Country rivals West Bromwich Albion in the Birmingham Challenge Cup.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw, meaning a penalty shootout to determine who secured a spot in the semi-final of the competition. The hosts eventually won the tie after a 4-2 success in the shootout, and Wolves skipper Morphet said ‘it’s not how we wanted to end the year’ as the Old Gold saw their Challenge Cup run come to an end.
On the performance
“Obviously, we’re disappointed. We were far below our best today and we know that.
“I think the most disappointing thing is that although we showed a lot of fight and a lot of heart to get back into the game, we should’ve probably had a bit more control of the game and showed more of our qualities.
“Ultimately, it’s not how we wanted to end the year but it’s not a season defining result so we just have to work hard over Christmas, which we will do, and we will bounce back.”
On the positives from the game
“The fight is always there but I think we were a little bit off it in the first half, we weren’t on the front foot as we normally like to be.
“But all the girls always give everything and it’s just disappointing that during those little moments we didn’t come out with quality or a bit of luck.
“To end up exiting the County Cup is disappointing, so we will work hard over Christmas and get back to it.”
On going into 2025
“Well obviously, the league is our main focus now.
“Yes, we’ve hopefully got a chance to have a great memory in the FA Cup, but the league has always been our focus, and that is what we have to focus on now as we have a tough January.
“That is what we really want to be striving towards now and working really hard to do well in.”
On facing Cheltenham in the FA Cup
“I think there will be a lot between our teeth going into that game. We know what happened earlier on in the season.
“We are lucky that we get that opportunity to put it right.
“We all love the FA Cup, we all know the special memories we’ve made the past couple of seasons, so that will be something that we don’t take lightly.
“We will really prepare properly and look forward to it.”
