Merrick | ‘We absolutely dominated the game’

Beth Merrick was proud to secure Wolves Women all three points and make it three consecutive victories for the Old Gold in their clash against Middlesbrough in the FAWNL on Sunday.

The midfielder netted her goals two minutes apart inside the opening stages of the contest, and has reflected on the squad's dominance and consistency, as well as why the players were disappointed not to have scored more goals, whilst also shifting her focus to this weekend's journey up to Hull City.

On the team's display against Boro

“When we got into the changing rooms, we were really proud and happy with the clean sheet, we’re obviously happy with the three points, but I think we are all a little bit disappointed that we have only come away with two goals.

“We absolutely dominated the game, but I think it was a bit of a shame that it only finished 2-0 because I don’t think that the scoreline reflected the game.”

On her brace in two minutes

“It was incredible, I haven’t scored for a while so it’s nice to keep the account open.

“I’ve missed a few chances, so I am slightly disappointed to come away with only two goals in that game.

“I think myself and the team dominated today and it’s a shame that we couldn’t turn that into a few more chances. Overall though it’s a really proud moment for me.”

On the squad’s three consecutive victories

“Momentum is everything, we speak about it every year in terms of what we do, we just want to keep that momentum going into each game.

“We know the next game, Hull away, is a really difficult game, we really struggled there last year so we have to do everything right this week to make sure that we are getting ready and preparing right for that game.”

On keeping a clean sheet and consistency

“It’s so important, particularly the clean sheet as that is what we walk away being most proud of.

“There have definitely been times this year and last year where we have come away with people scoring silly goals so to make sure that we capitalised on that at 2-0 was amazing.

“But we just need a little bit more focus on making sure that when we dominate teams, we really do put them to the sword.”

On Sunday's visit to Hull

“The tenacity and the work rate that everyone showed to keep going was crucial, it is a shame that we didn’t come away with more but, having another clean sheet and another three points are the most important thing this week.

“So, we get in and we work hard, we’ve got a big squad now with people disappointed with minutes on the bench, so it is really competitive in training to keep going with that as well.”
