Dan McNamara says good teams find ways to win when they are not at their best, after Wolves Women held on for a 2-1 victory against Stoke City on Sunday afternoon.
The Old Gold found goals through Amber Hughes – scoring her 100th for the club – and Beth Merrick at the SEAH Stadium, which proved enough for a hard-fought victory.
Wolves sit top of the FAWNL after winning five of their six league games while also remaining unbeaten in all competitions, heading into a period of back-to-back cup ties.
On Amber reaching 100 Wolves goals
“It was an outstanding individual goal [by Hughes]. She deserved to get that [100th goal] today at home in front of her family.
“I’m delighted for Amber. 113 matches with 100 goals is an astonishing record. I can’t believe someone hasn’t taken her from the league above over the last four or five years.
“Hopefully we see many more [goals] in a Wolves shirt.”

On the victory over Stoke
“I said to the girls that the real positive was that we found a way to win. I felt Stoke wanted it more than us – they came out fighting, they fought for first, second and third balls at times.
“We couldn’t have argued if they had gone and scored to get a draw. We have got to figure out why that is happening at home in front of a fantastic crowd, but on the positive, it’s another league win.”
On Merrick’s impressive form
“Beth has been absolutely superb so far this season – it was another impactful performance from her.
“When those two [Hughes and Merrick] get on the ball you always know something is going to happen. It’s those two individual moments that got us over the line.”
