Hughes’ second-half header secured a one-nil victory over West Bromwich Albion at Molineux on Sunday afternoon, adding three more points and momentum towards the final few weeks of the FA WNL season.
Hughes touched on the performance, showing character and belief, scoring and playing at Molineux, and remaining ready during the final stages of the season.
On the performance
“It feels amazing, on a personal note to score and get us over the line, but absolutely we weren't good enough today.
“I think at half time, that’s what was said, it didn't need to be said, we knew it ourselves, we talked about character and belief, and I think we showed that in the second half and got there in the end.”
On showing character and belief
“We have it in abundance, from the starting 11, to the bench, to the staff, everyone does believe in us and we really do believe it's our year.
“We dug deep in the second half, we did what we needed to do, and what we didn't do in that first half, and as I said we got the win and the three points.”
On Hughes’ goal
“Yes it was a great ball, one of those from Morph where I was in the right place at the right time, I enjoyed it, but it's always about the team and everything that comes before the goal, that's what makes it.”
On playing at Molineux
“We’re so lucky to play here and that's all down to the staff for getting it on here, we’re getting used to playing in big games and big occasions, which might hold us in good stead for the upcoming weeks, getting used to playing in environments like this.
“Thank you to everyone for getting the game on here, and it was extra special doing it here in front of so many great fans.”
On remaining ready in the final few games
“We can only control what we do ourselves, we want to be there ready, if Burnley slip up, we want to keep our confidence up, we don't know what will happen in our season, but we have to be ready and raring which is the key message.”
On fantastic squad depth
“100%. You have the starting 11, then the subs who make such an impact, but it's the attitude from everyone which is so good.
“You have players not starting but not moping around, everyone is so happy for each other and I think that togetherness is what will get us over the line this season."
