Dan McNamara was pleased with his Wolves Women side's character despite a defeat on the opening game of WSL2.
Wolves were beaten 2-0 away to Newcastle United at the Gateshead International Stadium, but the ability to remain competitive within the game was a major positive.
Despite falling to a two-goal deficit within the opening 18 minutes, the Old Gold can take positives from the performance.
McNamara focused on the performance, the ability to compete against a top-quality opposition, the new challenge of the WSL2, and the outstanding support.
On the performance
"We knew today was going to be a learning experience.
"They're a top side. I don't think they'd be out of place in WSL with the players they've got, the way they move the ball, and I also don't think that'll be the worst goal line that you see here this season.
"I thought they were excellent. But on the flip side of that, I also thought we showed real heart and real character.
"For our first outing in WSL 2, a lot of the team never experienced this level or have been out of the level for a long time.
"So, I thought they showed some real good fight and character and what we want to see is that we can work on the other bits, the bits that cost us the two goals, the transitional moments that we know are so key at this level. We can work on them."
On competing with top quality sides
"I thought we actually threatened the goal a few times, not a lot, which you wouldn't expect to when you come to Newcastle away. But we had some 8-9 box entries in the first half, and we tested the keeper on a few opportunities.
"Charlotte has a great one where she wins a corner and we nearly come good with that. Potentially have a penalty shout in the first half, which would make it really interesting.
"But you get some of them, you don't get some of them. And as I said, we've just got to keep learning, and we've got another game next week where we can put the wrongs right."
On the new challenge of WSL2
"Today was about testing ourselves at that WSL 2 level, getting this historic day out of the way, if you like, because yes, it's been good.
"Yes, it's been emotional, but ultimately we get on the coach with no points. So, we've got to make sure we put that right quickly.
"It's a scoreline that is not to be too disheartened by and as I said, look, if we'd have come here and sat in front of the goal and not got out of our half, which in moments we did, but we still threatened their goal at times."
On the support
"I think there was a little bit of commotion in the stand because apparently they've not had anybody come and sing like that before. But welcome to Wolves. I think there'll be a few fan bases that hear what we heard today.
"So, a lot of praise for the fans. I thought they were excellent. I don't know how many of them came up, but there was certainly a large portion of them in that stand.
"So, yes, a lot of thanks for that. It's a long way to get up here, but they've been part of a historic day. It's our first step into professional football, our first step into WSL2, and it was brilliant that they were part of it."
