Morphet and Price revel in ‘emotional’ historic promotion

Wolves captain Anna Morphet and former skipper Anna Price believe the women’s first-team’s promotion to WSL 2 is deserved after years of dedication from a vast number of people.

Morphet finally got her hands on the trophy having been part of a Wolves Women side which has come so close to promotion on several occasions in recent seasons, while legendary former captain Price is now part of the backroom staff having brought her playing career to an end following more than 30 years in gold and black.

And the pair reflected on being part of a momentous occasion for Wolves after Charlotte Greengrass’ goal secured victory over Plymouth Argyle in the FAWNL play-off and promotion to the professional leagues for the first time in the club’s history.

On lifting the play-off trophy

Morphet: “It’s surreal and honestly, a massive relief. All the work that’s gone into, not just this year, but the last couple of seasons – we’re in dreamland.

“I couldn’t find the words to describe it. I’m so lucky and so grateful to be part of this group.”

On what has gone into promotion

Price: “I’m so proud and just so happy for everyone – the volunteers, the staff, the players – it’s just incredible and it’s been a long time coming. I feel like we’ve been close over the last few seasons, and it’s just what we deserve. We really do. What these girls put in, going to work, coming in at night time for training, it’s relentless, and they deserve nothing more than to lift that trophy today and bring on Super League football.

On a tightly contested final

Morphet: “We have to give massive credit to Plymouth and a genuine congratulations on their season, because they’ve got a fantastic group and showed their quality on the ball today. It’s a final, it’s there for the taking and it’s anyone’s game.

“Charl [Greengrass] has taken her chance absolutely brilliantly and I’m sure they’ll go on to grow as a group, but we just had to dig in today, put our bodies on the line, everyone grafted and gave absolutely everything they had.

“To get over the line, finally, it’s an amazing feeling.”

On reaction to the final whistle

Price: “I was in tears. So much emotion. I’m quite good at not crying and holding it in, but I cried. It was such an emotional time. I was so happy for the girls on that pitch and the bench and everyone involved deserved that.

“But it wasn’t just about today, it was about the likes of Jade Cross, the likes of players from the last 10, 15, and even 20, 30 years even. It’s incredible.

“It’s where we need to be and we deserve it. There’ll be plenty of celebrations tonight.”
