Fer Lopez believes the style of football Wolves are playing under Cesar Peixoto is helping him thrive in gold and black and was a big contributor in him picking up the club’s first monthly player award.
The Spaniard was the first recipient of the SUDU Player of the Month award after he shone in August thanks to three goals and two assists from his five appearances – registering a goal contribution every 73 minutes on the pitch.
But with Wolves having not won from their first two games in September, Lopez is determined to help the team bounce back this weekend when the Old Gold head to Bramall Lane to take on Sheffield United.
On his first SUDU Player of the Month award
“I’m obviously very happy. It’s very nice to win this award and I’m very proud. I’m very happy to win this award and hopefully there are more to come.
“I just wanted to say a big thank you to all my teammates who helped me achieve this award and to the fans for their support, home and away. They are incredible.
“Also, to the coaching staff for believing in me. They put me in a position that helped me play as I’m playing now. Just a big thank you to everyone who made this possible. I’m very happy and grateful for the award.”
On a positive start to life in the Championship
“I think we started the league well against Blackburn, especially the first half, but it was a disappointing result to draw the game, especially in the way that it happened because we could have lost it on the counters.
“Then we bounced back in Preston, we beat them comfortably, but the most important game for me was Stoke because we conceded very early and the winning teams need to bounce back. Not all the time is everything going to go your way.
“We conceded early and they had a chance for 2-0, but after that it was all us, having a lot of chances. Rodrigo scored the best two goals I’ve seen in my life! He deserved it, he’s a great player and I was very happy for him.
“We needed to bounce back and we did. We won the game comfortably, so I think August was a very good month for us to build on. So far in September, we have to improve, but the results will come, 100 per cent.”
On scoring his first brace for Wolves
“Especially the first goal was very important because when you’re away from home, it’s very difficult. Preston are a very direct team and, for us, they’re also difficult to defend against because there are a lot of long balls.
“You cannot have the control in the game that you would like to have. But I think after we scored to make it 1-0, we could sit back a little bit more because we knew that they weren’t going to create as much as maybe other teams you’re going to play against.
“That is why the first goal was very important and after Arma scored and I scored the second one, the game was done, so it was very important to get our first win away and I was very happy to score twice.”

On assisting as well as scoring
“For me, the most important thing is the team. If I can contribute to the team’s success, I’m very happy. I don’t care if it’s a goal or an assist. Sometimes I prefer to give a great assist rather than score a tap-in. But that’s just me.
“I also don’t consider myself a selfish player. I want to get all the players involved in the game. That’s why sometimes I drop deep to try to build the play from there.
“I’m very happy to contribute either way and let’s hope I can do it more times.”
On playing in front of the Wolves fans again
“I’m very happy to be back, especially with how things are going now. We are playing a lot more of my type of football. A lot more attacking, trying to get the ball and trying to be more in control with the possession.
“I know this last game was a bit harder because of the game plan, but I’m very happy and the support we get is crazy – especially away, when you see it more. The away end is totally filled up in every stadium we go to, but when I see highlights from other Championship games, you don’t always see it that way.
“It’s very important to have fans that support us and I know that they will. I can’t wait for the next home game again, especially with it being a big game against West Brom, so I’m hoping to win.”

On bouncing back this weekend
“In the last two games, it’s been a bit difficult. Especially after the West Ham defeat, which I didn’t think we deserved. Also, after the mistakes we made in the Birmingham game, it was a little bit sad, and I was a little bit bad mentally.
“But our goal is still the same – to win the league and get promoted.”
